Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to\u00a0healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam):<\/b><\/span>\u00a0The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying\u00a0causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere):<\/b><\/span>\u00a0Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\">Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms;\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals\u2019 self-healing process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Doctor as Teacher (Docere)<\/b><\/span><b>:<\/b>\u00a0Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health.\u00a0They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Treat the Whole Person<\/b><\/span><b>:<\/b>\u00a0Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental,\u00a0emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors.
